Causes of Mesothelioma

The major cause of the cancer of mesothelioma is the exposure to the mineral known as asbestos. This mineral is freely available in nature and was used quite extensively in various applications like construction, shipping, oil refineries and many others. The use of asbestos in the modern times started in the age of the industrial revolution and was continued right up till the late twentieth century. Despite of the fact that the harmful effects of the mineral were known to men as early as the 1950s still the use of the mineral was persisted with in multitude of operations.

The asbestos fiber is very small in size. As a result it can penetrate through the various natural defense mechanisms of the human body. Once inside the body it easily makes its way into the mesothelium that surrounds the majority of the internal organs of the human body. This asbestos fiber has a long latency period that could be as long as 30 to 40 years. For this much length of time the asbestos fiber remains dormant within the mesothelium. After that it starts interfering with the working of the mesothelial cells. How exactly it interferes with the functioning is still inexplicable. But this interference leads to the development of the cancerous cells in the mesothelium.

There has been no proven link between the cancer of mesothelioma as well as smoking. But it is known that if a person has been exposed asbestos and is also a habitual smoker then he is more likely to develop the cancer of mesothelioma. There are several other factors as well that aid the development of the cancer of mesothelioma when coupled with the exposure to the mineral asbestos.
