Know the types of Mesothelioma to identify a patient
In the present time, among all the diseases, cancer acts as a threat to the human civilization as well as to the doctors. There are several types of cancers that have been discovered so far, among which Mesothelioma is the rarest one. Asbestos exposure is the single known cause of this cancer, which takes 30 – 50 years time to develop the cancerous tissues. Such long latency period of this disease causes problem to detect it.
Doctors face difficulties to diagnose and treat Mesothelioma. The symptoms of it are very common and similar with other diseases. Another problem associated with this disease is, the fibrous dust of asbestos is so small that, medical practitioners are unable to trace them. There are three types of Mesothelioma that have been identified so far, named, Pleural, Peritoneal and Pericardial. There are certain similarities of symptoms and treatment among these types, but most of the things of these types of Mesothelioma are different with each other.
Most of the Mesothelioma patients get affected by Pleural type. It is basically the cancer of the lining of lungs, named ‘pleural’. This is the fibrous sheets, which helps to protect the organ. The patients of it experience symptoms like chest wall pain, shortness of breath, coughing of blood and so on. On the other hand, the peritoneal Mesothelioma infects the lining that surrounds the organs and inside abdomen, called peritoneum. On the other side, the least common type of Mesothelioma is pericardial. If affects the lining that surrounds the heart, called pericardium.
Modern medical science has implemented several Mesothelioma treatments, which include radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and surgery. Approximately 74.6% improvement rate of the combination of chemotherapy and radiation therapy has been observed so far.
