Radiation

Radiation therapy is most often used in order to provide only a symptomatic relief to the patient. In majority of the cases it is used in conjunction with the other treatment methods like surgery and chemotherapy. There are generally two types of radiation therapies. In the older radiation therapy the radiation beam is directed towards the afflicted region in order to kill the cancerous cells. In the newer type of radiation therapy known as the brachytherapy a radioactive rod is placed inside the afflicted region or closer to it. The radioactive rays coming out of the rod destroys the cancerous cells. In the case of radiation therapy the damage to the nearby healthy cells is quite minimal as the wavelength of the chosen radioactive material is quite small.
