What is Mesothelioma
Mesothelioma is one of the most dreadful cancers in the world today. There is no permanent cure for this cancer as of now and the best that the physician can do is to provide a symptomatic relief to the patient. The main cause of the cancer of mesothelioma is the exposure of the human body to the mineral known as asbestos. This mineral is freely available in nature and is found in almost all the countries of the world. The worrisome fact regarding this mineral is that this fiber is very small in size and can easily evade the natural defenses that the human body possesses to prevent the entry of harmful elements inside the body. Once inside the body this fiber then remains dormant for a very long time which could be as long as 30 to 40 years. After such a long time this fiber then starts interfering with the working of the mesothelial cells that result in the development of the cancerous tissues. Mesothelioma is the cancer of the mesothelium that forms a protective membrane around majority of the internal organs of the human body.
The symptoms of this cancer are not at all specific to the disease only and thus it is very difficult to detect the cancer in its earlier stages. In majority of the cases the cancer is always detected in the last stages when the best that can be done for the patient is to make his remaining life more and more pain free and comfortable. The cancer of mesothelioma is very fast assuming alarming proportions and needs to be tackled on an immediate basis. It is not only the matter of concern for the medical scientists but also the common man as it’s his life and that of his near and dear ones that is at stake.
